Stay ahead with some simple home checks

Give your home a little TLC this autumn

As the days get shorter and the temperature starts to drop, now’s the perfect time to give your home a seasonal check-up. A few simple steps can help you stay warm, safe, and stress-free all year round—plus, they could save you money in the long run.

Here are some easy ways to get started:

Test your boiler

Before the cold weather sets in, give your boiler a quick test to make sure it’s working properly. If it’s been off for a while, switch it on and check for any unusual noises or error messages. Catching issues early means you won’t be left in the cold when you need it most.

Top tip: If you’re a VIVID customer and your boiler isn’t working, get in touch so we can help you get it sorted quickly.

Bleed your radiators

If your radiators aren’t heating up evenly—warm at the bottom but cool at the top—they might need bleeding. This helps release trapped air and keeps your heating system running efficiently, so your home stays cosy and your energy bills stay low.

How to do it: Use a radiator key to slowly release air until water starts to come out. Have a cloth ready to catch any drips and be aware you may need to top up your boiler pressure!

You can report issues with your radiators directly through your online account.

Check your alarms

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are essential for keeping your home safe.

Alarm Safety Checklist:

  • Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

  • Press the test button – make sure it sounds.

  • Check for low battery beeps.

  • Replace batteries if accessible, or contact us if sealed.

  • If the alarm doesn’t respond, replace it.

Did you know?
Carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless – and can be deadly. Testing your alarm could save lives.

General Tips

  • Keep alarms dust-free (vacuum gently).

  • Don’t cover or paint over alarms.

  • Make sure they’re not blocked by furniture or decorations.

Other quick checks to consider

  • Clear your gutters – Leaves and debris can cause blockages and damp.

  • Check for draughts – Use draught excluders or sealant to keep the warmth in.

  • Service your appliances – Especially gas cookers and fires, to make sure they’re safe and efficient.
