Fire safety advice to keep you and your neighbours safe this Christmas

We want all our customers to be safe. We’re committed to ensuring the highest level of safety when it comes to managing fire risks.

Many of the things we enjoy over the Christmas period, such as the fairy lights, candles and decorations, can all be fire hazards.

Here’s how you can help keep your family and your neighbours safe:

  • Check your Christmas tree lights carry the British Safety Standard sign.

  • Be careful with candles – never leave them unattended and don’t place them near your tree or anything can catch light easily. Keep candles, lighters and matches out of reach of children.

  • When cooking your Christmas dinner, make sure you don’t leave it unattended. Switch off the hob and oven if you leave the house.

  • If you live in a block of flats, keep communal areas clear.

  • If you have friends or family staying over the Christmas period, make sure they know how to evacuate your home in the event of a fire.

  • Never overload electrical sockets. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go to bed.

  • Don’t attach decorations to lights or heaters as they can burn easily

  • Take the time to check on your elderly relatives and neighbours during the festive period

  • And there are some fire safety tips that are useful to remember all-year round, such as making sure to put out cigarettes properly and checking your smoke alarms regularly.
