Electrical safety in your home

Keeping you safe

To keep you and your home safe, we need to carry out an electrical safety test every 5 years. This test is essential, and if any follow-up work is needed, it’s important that we complete it promptly.

What does this mean for you?

We’ve instructed sub-contractors to help us with the testing. You'll receive a letter, email, phone call or text message from us (VIVID), NRT Electrical or Wessex Electricals to introduce themselves and book an appointment. Please don’t ignore these, as we have to complete the test by its due date.

Our contractors will make 3 attempts to complete your electrical safety test. After that, if they haven’t been able to reach you, we’ll contact you directly to arrange an appointment together.

We understand that from time to time you may need to move an appointment. If so, please contact us as soon as you can – we won’t be able to schedule a visit beyond the due date. Here’s a reminder of how you can get in touch.

What’s involved in the test?

The electrical test normally takes 2-3 hours to complete, depending on the size of your home or number of circuits. We'll need access to all rooms to inspect sockets, switches and any other electrical accessories. And we’ll need clear access to your fuseboard.

We’ll also have to switch off your electricity for a short duration of the test.

When the test is completed, we’ll send you a copy of the certificate within 28 days. This will be provided by email, your online account or post. If there’s any follow-up work needed, we’ll aim to complete it within 28 days.

What happens if the test isn’t completed by the due date?

If we’re unable to complete the test because we haven’t been able to access your home after multiple attempts, we may have to escalate the matter through legal routes as a last resort - to ensure compliance and to keep your home safe.
