Home, community and support when life changes

Why staying home matters most

Richard has called his Hampshire cul-de-sac home for over 20 years. For him, home isn’t just a building—it’s family, safety and a place to belong. So, when a serious car accident turned his life upside down, staying put mattered more than ever.

Through it all, Richard never wanted to leave the home he loves. “When you’ve spent years making a house your own, you don’t want to move because of an accident,” he explains. “This is where my memories are, where my kids live, and where my community is.”

That community really showed up for him. Neighbours noticed when his car disappeared and checked in with his wife. “It’s little things like that,” Richard says. “People care here.”

We were proud to play our part too. Our promise is to support our customers where needed, as best we can—and for Richard, that meant installing handrails and making adaptations quickly so he could keep his independence. “Those rails were a godsend,” he says. “They meant I could get into the garden on my own.”

Staying put was about more than convenience. “Home is family,” he says. “It’s where you feel safe, where you want to be. Being here has helped me recover faster and kept life as normal as possible for my wife and kids.”

As he continues his recovery, Richard feels happy knowing his home works for him and his family. The adaptations mean he can keep his independence, enjoy his garden, and stay connected to the community he loves.
