Councillors visit new affordable housing site in Southampton

Upcoming affordable housing development on Archery Road

Local councillors in Southampton visited VIVID’s upcoming affordable housing development on Archery Road to see how the long-standing vacant site is being transformed into much-needed homes in the community.

Fresh from completing new homes on the former Eastpoint Centre site in Thornhill, the leading housing association hosted two of the Woolston ward councillors Warwick Payne and Sue Blatchford on its latest site, the former Mayfield Garage.

Working with development partner Imperial Homes and with funding support from Homes England, VIVID is redeveloping this brownfield site to create eight new affordable homes. Responding to the city’s housing needs, all the homes will be made available for social rent.

Demolition was completed last month, and all initial foundations for the homes are now in place.  Work on the homes themselves is expected to start in January.

Councillor Warwick Payne, who’s previously held the housing portfolio at Southampton City Council, said: “It’s good to see this brownfield site, which has been neglected for some time, being used to crucially provide homes for social rent given the demand in Southampton.”

Dave Diboll, Director of Construction at VIVID, said: “We know there’s a big demand for affordable housing in Southampton and how much it matters to people waiting for a place they can truly call home. We’re proud to be redeveloping Archery Road — our second recent site in the city — to create homes for social rent that meet local needs. We can’t wait to welcome customers here and see them settle in. These homes will offer the security and peace of mind that comes with having an affordable place to call your own, and that’s something that makes a real difference in the long term.”

Chris Sheehan, Construction Director of Imperial Homes added: “As a locally based company, it is a pleasure for Imperial Homes to work alongside VIVID to transform this brownfield parcel of land so close to the city centre. The development will provide much needed social rented homes for the community, and we’re proud to play a part in delivering that. By partnering with locally sourced trades throughout the build, the project has fostered a real sense of collaboration and community spirit.”

Subject to progress, it’s expected that all homes on the site will be completed by summer next year.
