Tips for your online job search

It’s Getting Online Week, and we want to help you make the most of using digital tools for your online job search. Take a look at our top tips to help you find your job online!

Searching for jobs

It’s important to try not to rely too much on one method of job-searching – this limits the amount of jobs that you can find online. Mix it up and use various different jobsites, such as Indeed, GlassDoor, LinkedIn and more.

Setting up notifications on these websites to alert you when a job that fits what you’re looking for is posted can be really helpful. Be as specific as possible to avoid receiving job alerts that aren’t relevant to you.

When you are looking for companies to work for, make sure that you’re targeting the right ones for you. Bigger companies have more benefits and job security – the right company could be where you are already a customer! This would strengthen your application because you are already familiar with the reputation of the business.

Applying to jobs

Different recruiters prefer different ways of applying – some prefer CVs, some prefer cover letters and some like to receive both.

If you are given an option, it’s always better to send both a CV and a cover letter. This is your way of introducing yourself to your potential future employer, and will set you one step ahead of other applicants who only fill in the basic details.

When writing your CV and cover letter, ask yourself the question:

What can you offer that is different to everybody else?

Target your CV to the job and put down information that reflects why you are best-suited for the role. Keywords can be a great way of reflecting who you are and how you stand out from the crowd. These are words that describe your skills, including:

  • Adaptable
  • Quick learner
  • Flexible
  • Quick-minded
  • Solution focussed
  • Empathetic

And more!

Recruiters also use keyword searches to look through CV databases when searching for applications, so make sure you use relevant keywords on your CV and cover letter to make it easier for employers to find you.
