Terry: Journey to feeling at home

A new chapter, with support every step of the way

Before moving into his VIVID home, Terry spent years living in his van. It was a lifestyle he had grown used to, and after so long living independently, the idea of settling into one place didn't come naturally.

Even after moving into his home more than two and a half years ago, he wasn't sure he would stay.

At first, he kept the van parked outside, believing he might move on again. But gradually, with the right support around him and the companionship of his dog, Coco, something changed. The uncertainty began to fade and the idea of staying put started to feel right. What had once felt temporary was beginning to feel like home.

The journey wasn't always straightforward. Terry lives with the effects of a serious head injury, which impacts his memory and ability to process information. Everyday tasks that many people take for granted, such as reading letters, understanding official paperwork or completing forms, can be difficult and overwhelming.

That's where support from VIVID's Independent Living Officers, Claire and Michelle, made a lasting difference.

Taking the time to get to know Terry and understand the challenges he faced, Claire and Michelle built a relationship based on trust. Over time, they learned what support worked best for him and were there to help him navigate the things he found difficult. That understanding and consistency gave Terry the confidence to settle into his home, knowing he had people he could turn to when he needed support. Coco helped too. As a familiar face around the neighbourhood, Coco became Terry's connection to the local community, helping him feel more rooted and giving him another reason to put down roots himself.

Over time, that support helped Terry gain confidence and feel secure in his tenancy. He credits Claire and Michelle with helping him stay the course during the early months, when he wasn't sure whether a settled lifestyle was for him.

Having a permanent home has also allowed Terry to reconnect with some of the things he enjoys. One of those is gardening. After many years without the opportunity, he has started growing plants again and takes pride in creating something that can flourish over time.

His beloved dog, Coco, has become something of a local celebrity. While Terry describes himself as someone who values his independence and enjoys his own company, daily walks with Coco have helped him feel connected to the neighbourhood around him.

Looking back, Terry believes the combination of a secure home and personalised support has transformed his quality of life. What once felt like a temporary stop has become somewhere he truly belongs. For Terry, home is now more than just four walls and a roof. It's a place of security, stability and peace of mind, somewhere he can look ahead with confidence and enjoy simply getting on with living.
