A happy home, 57 years in the making

Pauline and John share their experience of shared ownership and being part of a community

Pauline and John have been married for 57 years and have lived in many different places over that time, including spending several years in America. When they returned to the UK, shared ownership was a new option for them, but one they decided to explore. “I’d been used to the old-fashioned way of buying a house on a mortgage,” says John. “So, we investigated shared ownership.”

They’ve now been living in their apartment for three and a half years and have made themselves very much at home. “We are absolutely in bliss living in this apartment,” says John. “It suits us at this age. It’s a fantastic way to live.” Pauline agrees and particularly enjoys the peace and quiet. “It’s got beautiful views, it’s spacious and I really feel very comfortable here.”

It’s not only the apartment that they enjoy. Getting to know their neighbours has become an important part of life there too. “We’ve got some fantastic neighbours,” says John. There’s a mix of ages in the apartment block, and they really value the friendly community that has grown around them.

Shared ownership has been a positive experience for them, and John thinks it’s something more people should know about. He sees it as an option for people at different stages of life, including younger people looking for a way onto the property ladder.

Their shared ownership journey may have started as something completely new, but three and a half years later, Pauline and John are happy with where it has taken them.

They’ve found a place where they can enjoy life together, friendly neighbours and a community around them.

And after 57 years together, there’s one thing that has remained constant. As Pauline says: “We’ve always had a happy home.”
