Back to work for Simon…

Simon, 17 came to us when he was looking for a work experience placement to support his college studies. Little did he know it would lead to part-time employment!

Our Volunteer and Work Experience Co-ordinator helped him gain a placement shadowing the Maintenance Manager at a local hotel.

The hotel manager said: “It was a pleasure to have Simon with us. It wasn’t just a ‘carry the toolbox exercise’, he wanted to get involved and was proactive throughout his time here.  The Maintenance Team could not sing his praises enough and gave great feedback daily”.

Simon said: “I’ve really enjoyed learning about plumbing and I have gained lots of really useful skills.”

Simon went on to be offered permanent employment at the hotel in a role that fits in with his college studies.

Frances proves that you’re never too old to learn something new

Frances lives in one of our over 55’s homes and, like a lot of people, had no experience using a laptop until Cleon, our Digital Inclusion Officer helped to build her confidence.

Frances said: “I bought my laptop in 2013 and it had been in a box in the wardrobe until VIVID helped! I wanted to keep in touch with my children and grandchildren online. I’ve got a phone but I know that if I improve my skills I’ll be able to video call and see their faces, which would make such a difference!  I also want to research my family tree and find new cross stitch patterns online.

“Cleon helped me start from scratch – I had to learn how to turn the laptop on and off, how to open the web browser, and how to email.

“People like me need people to help them – a wee bit – or a lot! It’s a great thing that VIVID can offer this service. If you need help getting online, I’d say at least have a go before you say you can’t. You’re never too old to learn something new.”
