Staying safe whilst job searching online

Job searching online is one of the most popular ways of finding employment. It’s fast and easy and you can tailor your application to each job description with ease. However, you still need to be safe online. Some risks with job hunting can be:

  • Fake job posts leading to fraud or identity theft
  • Phishing emails tricking you into visiting fraudulent websites
  • Premium rate telephone scams pretending to be job interviews
  • Fraudulent work at home schemes.

You will never be asked to pay money in exchange for employment, DBS or other security checks, so don’t fall for it!

Remember not to divulge personal or financial information in any online application forms or your CV.

If you find browsing job boards to be infringing on your online safety, try an online community such as LinkedIn. You can create a profile and showcase your skills and experience whilst sifting through employer listings. Online job communities make it easier to interact with future employers, and smaller companies may offer direct contact information. This will make it easier for you to stay safe online.

Other tips

  • Make sure your potential employer is genuine before meeting for an interview
  • Install and update your antivirus software before going online
  • Be aware of job opportunities listed on other social media sites
