A new report by the National Housing Federation highlights a serious housing crisis in the South East.
Between 2012-2016 there was a shortfall of over 85,000 homes; the highest in the country after London.
The Home Truths report shows that far too few homes are being built to meet local needs, and stresses the importance of housing associations and the government working together.

The lack of supply drives up house prices and rental costs, making them increasingly unaffordable. Anyone seeking to buy the average home in the region now needs an income of more than £82,000 to afford a mortgage; this puts home ownership out of reach for many. Renting privately is also becoming less affordable. Average monthly rents now stand at £994, meaning local people spend almost 40% of their income on rent.
We're Hampshire’s largest provider of affordable homes and are working hard to help address the shortage. We're currently developing sites around the region that’ll deliver much needed homes. You can find out more on our 'current developments' page.
Home Truths acknowledges the vital role of housing associations in helping to address the housing crisis. Last year, housing associations built 26% of new homes in England and recent changes in Government policy will help them deliver even more, with an extra £2bn investment for building social rent homes. Affordable land supply from the government is another critical factor in housing associations being able to deliver more homes.
VIVID’s Director of New Business and Development, Mike Shepherd said: “We’re strongly committed to building 1,200 new homes a year to help address the housing crisis in Hampshire. We’re helping to create thriving communities in places that people want to live and grow. We’re building bright and modern flats and houses that suit modern lifestyles. And we’re offering our homes in a range of tenures to suit a wide range of needs.”
