Local support for those affected by coronavirus

There are a range of local community groups supporting people who are self-isolating because of the coronavirus, who can help with things like delivering food, shopping or simply phoning for a chat. We’ve recently announced our support for these groups and will be donating £125,000 to help them continue their great work, and £125,000 to local food banks across our operating area. Read more about this here

We’ve produced a helpful directory of groups who are recognised by Community and Voluntary Services (CVS), a local authority or organisations such as Good Neighbours. These groups usually have policies and procedures which keep customers and volunteers safe. If you can’t find what you are looking for, try contacting your local CVS directly as they should be able to signpost you to organisations that might help.

Many local communities are also setting up their own groups using social media such as Facebook or Next Door. While the intentions may be good, they may not have the appropriate policies and procedures in place to keep you and volunteers safe. So, if you do use a Facebook or Next Door group during this time, please be smart about the information you give out. Here’s a list of tips to help you:

  • You will have to give your home address and maybe a telephone number to the administrator – this is likely to be through instant messenger. Do not post your personal details in a social media group - address, phone number, bank details.
  • You should not have to pay the person to deliver to you, only for the goods you receive but check with the group before you ask for help or place an order
  • Do not pay for shopping or supplies unless it's been delivered first
  • When booking a helper use a code word that only you and they can know. Ask the helper to confirm the code word so you can be sure you know who you are dealing with on the phone or doorstep
  • If you can, get the helper to leave the supplies on your doorstep
  • Nobody from these sites will contact you via email
  • Do not respond to any emails that are sent to you by people you do not know
  • Only use the recognised Facebook Groups set up to help, if you are unsure, get someone else to check for you first before asking for help
  • If you are unsure, check with the Facebook Group administrator about the helper they will have all the detail
